Hey Mango,

This particular skirmish was held on Saturday 1/23, so yes... it has passed. The guys running the skirmishes, however, tend to organize multiple events with similar themes, continuations of prior events, etc. You can find notifications of skirmishes on the forum under the same name.

Pick-up games are far more frequent (also located in a similar forum, aptly named "pick-up games." They're far more casual, although when Dracx runs them they tend to feel more like a well-organized skirmish. :) (*props to Dracx*)

Upcoming skirmishes are posted usually weeks, if not a month or more out from the event, and RSVP's are required. Upcoming pick-up games are posted weekly, usually just a few days before the Saturday it's held on. Keep an eye out in those forums regarding skirmishes, pick-up games (official and non-official), and you'll be as informed as the rest of us.

Scenario: Red Shadow Series, AR Forces attempting to recover VIP
Participants: Several Airsoft Colorado teams were present with several unaffiliated teams and individuals

Exercise Overview: An American Republic nuclear scientist is in need of extraction behind US forces lines. ARFOR and USFOR are both searching and attempting to recover and extract the VIP.
Exercise Evaluation: The end result of the skirmish resulted in Gorby being recovered by ARFOR and successfully being extracted. The skirmish provided a good situation for command and control of several squads performing multiple tasks, establishing a phase line and holding it.

Exercise Description
Operation Organization:The Skirmish was divided into two forces, the USFOR commanded by Josh “bearclaw” Vratil and the ARFOR commanded by Rob Daihl. One VIP was used, unescorted, deployed by game staff.
Unit Organization:ARFOR Commanding Officer (CO) was SFC Rob Daihl, no additional command staff was used. The unit was comprised of 4 squads forming one solid platoon.

Chronological Summary of Event

Primary Objective: Find, escort and extract Gorby
Secondary Objective: Establish solid phase line between USFOR and extraction point

The general plan of attack consisted sending all forces to assault the intial USFOR Defensive phase line, once contact was made and forward progress is evident, individual squads would begin SAR patrols. The number of squads deployed on patrols would depend on the deployment and strength of the USFOR. If light contact is maintained Raptor 1 and 2 would remain as primary defensive force and would act as the initial assaulting force if Gorby was captured. Raptor 3 and 4 would function as the Search and Rescue force. If medium to heavy contact is maintained all Raptor squads would remain on the established phase line.

Startex 0:00 – Mission startex commenced at 10:10. – the following times are not exact but function as a rough order of events.

+0h 2m: Raptor 4 was deployed heading west from the start point, while Raptor 1,2 and 3 advanced NW to the ridge line just east of the “y”
+0h 7m: Raptor 1, 2 and 3 encountered and eliminated the majority of the USFOR at the ridge line near the “y” all forces are ordered to push west and establish a solid phase line. First CCP is deployed just below the “y”
+0h 10m: Raptor 4 is given the go ahead to begin their SAR patrol.
+0h 15m: Raptor 1 and 2 begin to form a defensive phase line stretching 100m in length on the ridge line.
+0h 22m: Raptor 1 and 2 encounter light attacks from several directions across the line. Raptor 4 reports heavy resistance and movements being forces out of bounds of the AO, Raptor 4 disengages and returns back to the start point. Half of Raptor 3 is not in contact with Raptor 3 SL, Raptor 3 is roughly deployed east of Raptor 1 and 2 on the ridge line.
+0h 27m: Raptor 4 passes through the initial start point and begins is second patrol heading north of the “y”
+0h 30m: Raptor 1,2 and half of 3 are still holding the phase line and fending off sporadic attacks. Majority of the attack came from the west down the path.

+0h 40m: USFOR fireteam pushes through the AR initial start point / spawn point and attacks the phase line from the east.
+0h 45m: USFOR fireteam is eliminated and the phase line is reestablished, the missing half of raptor 3 is found to the north down the northern path.
+0h 48m: Three members of Raptor 3 and two members of Raptor 2 are reassigned to form a new Raptor 3. The Balance of Raptor 3 was reassigned to Raptor 2, tasked with the defense of the phase line. Raptor 3 was to function as second SAR patrol team. Raptor 4 continues to report in and is now to the north of the “rock fort”.
+0h 53m: Raptor 3 SL had weapon malfunctions and had not deployed Raptor 3. The 5 members of the new raptor team were redesignated Raptor 5, and deployed without “Mazmaz”. Raptor 5 deployed to the west following Raptor 4 original patrol route.
+1h 10m: Raptor 1, 2 and 3 all are deployed on the phase line and fend off several pushes from the north and northwest of the phase line. Raptor 5 reports light contact and proceeds to a overlook on the southwest ridge.
+1h 30m: A member of Raptor 2 says they see one individual moving to the southwest, as small detachment of both Raptor 1 and Raptor 2 is sent out to check if this is Gorby. Raptor 4 is under attack at the USFOR rear attempting to draw enemy forces into believing that they have Gorby.
+1h 35m: Raptor 1 confirms that it is Gorby and returns him to the center of the phase line. Raptor 6 orders all forces to converge on the phase lined hill and defend the area.
+1h 40m: Raptor 6 attempts to confirm with Damon where Gorby needs to be taken, no answer is received. Raptor 5 is cut off from returning by enemy squads
+1h 43m: Gorby is sent up the trail east with 3 bodyguards as the location of the extraction point was still not confirmed
+1h 50m: Game staff confirms with Raptor 6 that the extraction point is the “y” and he must be held there for 15min. Raptor 5 regroups with Raptor 1, 2 and 3 on the phase line. Gorby is relocated to the “y” and communication is made with USFOR letting them know the ARFOR has gorby and the timer has started.

+2h 05m(ENDEX):: USFOR makes several strong pushes and makes it over halfway up the phase line hill before time expires. Gorby was safely extracted.


Improvements, Conclusions and Recommendations:

The beginning of the skirmish had a rough start, while the majority of the squads maintained cohesion, half of Raptor 3 separated from their SL. The initial phase line was very sloppy with the bulk of the force grouping in the least important area while leaving on a few individual defending the most critical points. When this was pointed out and squads were told to spread out, the majority of players still massed and moved to the middle of the phase line, not leaving anyone to guard the flanks. Eventually the phase line was established but had there been any substantial enemy push the lines during this time the ridge most likely would have been lost.

Communications were effective and was not too cluttered, Gorby made no attempt to contact the ARFOR. Once Raptor 4 descended over a 2nd ridge and behind rocks radio communication with them was very hard due to equipment limitations. Once the in-field reorganization was completed, the level of organization between squads and the CO was much better.

A personal observation was made during the briefing, apparently standing in a single file line by squad was too hard of task. This shows a lack of squad command structure from the beginning. Also both sides are guilty of not having complete uniforms, some of the ARFOR had tan jackets / Soft Shells and the USFOR had several green jackets / soft shells. Future events should have proper uniform regulations mentioned and enforced.

Nice Rob. Was Gorby supposed to stay put until found? It was my understanding that he moved out under his own command and "found" the USForces on his own. (Maybe I am wrong)
Also the Respawn traffic cone for the ARFORCES was not placed correctly and approximately 12-20 ARFORCES players wandered around looking for it during the first 34 minutes of the game until Bearclaw went and got it and placed it correctly. This drastically affected the game play for the first hour. LOL :P I never even saw Gorby myself but I do understand that he has a guard with him as well. Correct?
I am very glad that nobody got hurt on the icy sections along the ridge lines. A few slips and falls but no injuries to speak of.

I will expand on some of Crow's questions in regards to "Gorby". During the briefing, it was put out that he would not be alone and that he would be in a flight suit. When we came across "Gorby", he was by himself in woodland BDU's.

No, he was not supposed to stay put. He had the ability to do as he pleased, but it was my understanding that he would actively try to find the AR forces.

As for Gorby- in the original (very original) briefing, he was supposed to have a bodyguard, yes. Although, I do not think anyone volunteered to be that bodyguard, which is why he did not have one (my word is not law, I could be wrong, but I believe this is the case). I know he was not deployed with a bodyguard.

I did not hear anything about a flight suit, however. During the AR forces briefing, I believe it was mentioned that he would be in AR forces uniform, but flight suit was not specified.

"Flight Suit" was never stated by me.

I will say that in the nearly 5 years I have spent hosting games, this was my first stab at a "VIP" type game. As every adult player here knows, it's hard to balance real life and airsoft. I could have easily devoted a solid week of planning and prep for this game but I have a job, two kids, and a pregnant wife. I will admit - on the down side, there could have been some more prep work, a better briefing, and a player packet. On the up side, we all got to play airsoft with 70 other players for free. In my opinion we all "won".

The US forces respawn point was placed by my squad. So it is our fault, we placed it where we thought it was going but we were way wrong! Good game though, we had fun.

the game went "milsim" to me, in the real world nothing ever goes as planned, and intel is rough at best im sure. if everyone knew exactly what was going on in the game i think it would be more like a movie then a milsim feel, thats just my opinion though. EVERY game i have played in has been like this too, so its not just this one.

the question i ask myself after every game, did it feel like milsim? if it did, then im happy about the day anyway it turned out.

ill also add that Gorby was not to stay put, that idea must have also been word of mouth.
